Size Matters! … When choosing outdoor artwork

Well that title should have got your attention!

In this business I often here from customers "We absolutely love the artwork, we just wish we'd gone bigger.".  In this post I discuss how to choose the right sized artwork for your space.

The size of the piece of outdoor wall art that you purchase is important. Think about where you are actually going to hang it. You do not want something that is too big that it dominates the entire wall, but on the flip side, nor do you want a piece of artwork that is too small. You need to really think about what size artwork would best suit YOUR outdoor space.  A townhouse garden or apartment balcony might best suit smaller pieces, while wide open spaces and decks offer scope for installing much larger works.

If you have a large wall or space, choosing art that's too small is a very common mistake. When it comes to choosing art, bigger is usually better. The general rule is to cover about 2/3 to 3/4 of the wall/fence panel with the art. As on a living room wall, one statement piece of artwork on a main wall or fence can add vibrancy to the whole outdoor living area.

To gain maximum pleasure from the art you love or to achieve maximum impact each time you encounter the piece, place it in a spot you view often. Large pieces in a prominent spot can be viewed through the windows of your home, while smaller pieces may best be appreciated tucked next to places where you sit or walk past.

Your outdoor spaces deserve just as much attention as the rooms inside your home. Creating a statement with your artwork can be accomplished with one or two bold pieces, or make a gallery wall with several smaller pieces.
